The majority of the Sequoia's interior design is shared with the Tundra, including the dashboard. The suspension, however, differs from that of the Tundra, with an independent multilink setup in the rear and disc brakes on all four corners. The 4.7-liter V-8 engine was the only option, mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. In 2005, a five-speed transmission was introduced, along with an updated engine that now includes Toyota's VVT-i valve timing system and a limited-slip center differential on four-wheel-drive models.

For the 2008 model year, Toyota introduced the second-generation Sequoia with a new engine option: a 381-hp 5.7-liter V-8 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 4.7-liter V-8 became the new base engine, but it was replaced by a 4.6-liter unit for the 2010 model year. However, beginning with the 2013 model year, the 5.7-liter V-8 became the only engine available. The second-generation Sequoia has a double wishbone rear suspension with coil springs to improve ride comfort, a locking center differential on four-wheel-drive models, and an optional air suspension that can raise and lower the vehicle.

For the 2018 model year, the Sequoia received another facelift, this time with a new headlight design and the Toyota Safety Sense-P suite of active safety features. Toyota replaced it with a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine mated to an electric motor located between the flywheel and torque converter. Toyota also equipped the Sequoia with a new audio multimedia system, which includes a standard 8.0-inch or optional 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, as well as standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Sequoia also has a new luxurious range-topping Capstone trim level and a TRD Off-Road package available.

Every Sequoia is equipped with a hybrid powertrain known as i-Force Max Torque outperforms its gasoline-powered competitors from GM, Ford, and Jeep. It also outweighs them, with a towing capacity of 9,520 pounds.

This new generation of Sequoia maintains the spacious interior design and comes equipped with a third row of seats as standard. There are two options for reducing the number of seats to seven: second-row captain's chairs or a standard second-row bench seat that can accommodate eight passengers. Both of the back rows have a restricted amount of headroom, especially with the panoramic sunroof option installed.

The Tundra pickup is offered as an option, but the iForce MAX hybrid powertrain is standard on the Sequoia. This powertrain produces 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque by combining a twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor. The Tundra and Sequoia SUV share the same 10-speed automatic transmission. While four-wheel drive is optional on most models and standard on the off-road-focused TRD Pro, rear-wheel drive is standard. The four-wheel-drive Sequoia Capstone we tested reached a quarter-mile speed of 14.3 seconds at 94 mph and reached 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. Although it is marginally slower than the Ford Expedition Timberline, it is faster than the GMC Yukon Denali that we previously tested.

Along with these off-road features, the TRD Pro sports forged 18-inch wheels shod in 33-inch tires, a front skid plate, a locking rear differential, and improved Fox dampers. During our first test drive, we were happy with the Sequoia's quiet cabin and comfortable ride, but we were not as happy with how it handled off-road driving. Its light steering effort can make it feel twitchy when cruising, and its extra-wide road feel makes it challenging to place in a lane—something we have also complained about in other big SUVs. We plan to test the Sequoia on our test track as soon as we have the opportunity, and we will update this story accordingly.

There are then two premium trim levels available: Platinum and the even more opulent Capstone, though we strongly advise against selecting the latter because of its ride quality issues and 22-inch wheels.

With its off-road suspension consisting of Fox Internal Bypass coilovers and rear remote-reservoir shocks, all-terrain tires, better clearances, and distinctive design elements, the TRD Pro is the tougher choice. To improve off-road capability, additional trim levels can opt for the TRD Off-Road package, which includes Bilstein shocks and springs. By tuning the suspension for better on-road handling, the TRD Sport package adopts a different strategy.
