- Toyota IST price in Tanzania is near 10 to 16 million TZS. Some ads reach 20 million for very low mileage cars.
- Toyota Passo price in Tanzania starts near 5 million TZS. It is the cheapest car in our list and uses little fuel.
- Toyota Crown price in Tanzania is near 12 to 25 million TZS. That range covers older Athlete cars from 2004 to 2007.
- Toyota Alphard price in Tanzania runs from 19 to 34 million TZS. Newer models from 2015 cost 63 to 88 million TZS.
- Land Cruiser V8 price in Tanzania starts near 95 million TZS. Cars built in 2020 or 2021 can reach 265 million TZS.

What Changes the Price
Four things move Japanese used car prices in Tanzania most.
| Factor | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Year | Newer cars cost more and pay less age tax | Build year on the export papers |
| Engine size | Larger engines pay more engine excise | Engine cc on the papers |
| Mileage | Low mileage lifts the ask | Odometer reading on the auction sheet |
| Auction grade | Grade 4 or higher means a cleaner body | The full auction sheet |
In this way ,year matters most in Tanzania because age tax starts at 8 years. A 2005 car landing in 2026 falls in the oldest age band. Engine size sets engine excise at 5 percent or 10 percent. A 1.0L Passo pays less than a 2.5L Crown or a V8.
Mileage and grade explain why two cars of one year differ. Low mileage cars with grade 4 or higher sell at higher asks. Ask for the auction sheet before you agree on any price.
Car Price vs Total Landed Cost
The sticker price shows only part of what you will pay. The Landed cost is the full bill when the car reaches your door. It adds freight and insurance and tax and port fees and registration.
Ads for cars already in Tanzania have paid their import tax. A direct import quote starts at the Japan price and adds tax. A CIF price already includes freight and insurance to Dar es Salaam. Tanzania taxes follow the CIF value that TRA sets for the car. That value can differ from the price on your invoice.
The table below shows tax as a share of the CIF value.
| Car age on arrival | Up to 2000cc | Over 2000cc |
|---|---|---|
| Under 8 years | About 53 percent | About 59 percent |
| 8 to 10 years | About 75 percent | About 81 percent |
| 11 to 20 years | About 95 percent | About 101 percent |
| Over 20 years | About 101 percent | About 107 percent |
Cars over 10 years old pay tax close to the CIF value. It makes cars already in Tanzania worth a close look. These shares leave out railway levy and port fees and registration. Rates come from the 2026 tax tool cited in our Toyota guide. Confirm every rate with TRA because rules changed on 1 July 2026. You can ask your agent about Vans and pickups or other rate.
Toyota Tax Example You Can Copy
Our Toyota guide shows a full tax example for a 1500cc car. See our best Toyota exporters guide for the full tax steps. Both cars have a 1500cc engine and an 8000 USD CIF value.
| Cost line | Car A under 8 years | Car B aged 10 years |
|---|---|---|
| CIF value | $8000 | $8000 |
| Taxes in total | $4272 | $5971 |
| CIF plus taxes | $12272 | $13971 |
| Same total in TZS at 2600 | 31.9 million | 36.3 million |
Car B pays about 1700 USD more tax because of its age. Still, it comes on top the port fees ,railway levy and registration. A licensed agent clears the car and files the TRA papers. Read our guide to clear Japanese cars at Tanzania customs first.
Prices by Budget
Pick a budget first and then match the cars to it. These budgets use the market prices from our list above.
| Budget | In TZS at 2600 | Cars that fit | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $5000 | Up to 13 million | Passo 2004 to 2008 and IST 2003 to 2005 and some older Crown cars | Body rust and engine noise |
| Under $10000 | Up to 26 million | IST and Crown 2004 to 2009 and Alphard 2002 to 2007 | Mileage and service papers |
| Under $20000 | Up to 52 million | Alphard 2008 to 2013 and Crown 2010 to 2011 | Grade and accident marks |
| Above $20000 | Over 52 million | Alphard from 2015 and Land Cruiser V8 | Full papers and one clear owner |
Under $5000 buys a clean Passo or an older IST. Under $10000 opens up Crown and Alphard cars from the 2000s. Under $20000 buys the best Alphard and Crown cars up to 2013. Land Cruiser V8 cars need about 36500 USD or more.
